FULBRIGHT-HAYS SEMINARS ABROAD PROGRAM
Indian School Education System: Trends & Challenges
Summer 2010

The Center for South Asia (CSA) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is pleased to serve as the host of the pre-departure orientation for the Summer 2010 Fulbright Seminar program to India. We are delighted to be collaborating with the US Department of Education Fulbright office and with the United States-India Educational Foundation in New Delhi.

Recent Updates from the Center for South Asia

Dear India Fulbrighters,

Greetings from the Center for South Asia (CSA) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. We were requested to serve as the host of the pre-departure orientation (PDO) for the Summer 2009 Fulbright Seminar program to India, and we are honored to have been asked to serve in this capacity. You most likely have already been in communication with Dr. Girish Kaul, program officer, from the United States-India Educational Foundation in New Delhi the institutional host for your program in India. We are delighted to be partnering with the USEFI in their endeavors. We are looking forward to meeting you in Madison for the PDO on Sunday, June 28 – Wednesday, July 1, 2009. In addition to hosting the PDO, we look forward to working with you post-India on your curriculum development projects and offer our website as a home to post your projects.

I have conducted two Fulbright Group Projects Abroad to India in 2003 and 2005 with a group of teachers from Wisconsin. You can find information about those trips and the lesson plans that were created by those teachers here. I am a huge fan of the Fulbright program and have seen firsthand what an impact this program has on the lives of teachers and their classrooms! I look forward to working with each of you over the course of the next few months.

A listserv has been set up and your e-mail addresses added–this will make it easier for us to correspond with each other. A message sent to india2010@lists.wisc.edu will go to all of the participants, as well as Fulbright staff in India (Dr. Girish Kaul) and Washington, D.C. (Carly Borgmeier), and to the Associate Director of CSA (Lalita du Perron). I’ve subscribed each of you at the e-mail address provided to me by the Fulbright office in D.C.; please let me know if you would prefer that I use a different address.

Program Fee: Each participant is required to contribute $450 to help defray the costs of the orientation seminar. Payments are due June 12th; checks should be made payable to “The Center for South Asia” and sent to me at:

Arrival and Lodging Information

You will be arriving to Madison on Sunday, June 28th at the Madison Truax Airport. There is a complimentary hotel shuttle to the Madison Concourse Hotel, where you will be staying. You will find a phone for the Concourse Hotel in the baggage claim area; upon arrival simply call the hotel to request the shuttle.

You will check into The Madison Concourse Hotel (1 W Dayton St. Madison, WI 53703 (800) 356-8293). You will be sharing a double room with a fellow participant. If you have any problems upon check in, please contact me on my cell phone at (608) 772-5171.

PDO Schedule

The PDO will also be held at the Madison Concourse Hotel. The orientation session will begin with a reception at 5 pm on Sunday evening. All meals will be included in the program and will be eaten together. Please inform me as soon as possible if you have any food allergies or restrictions. The PDO will continue on Monday and Tuesday at 9 am and end after dinner around 8 pm. A complete schedule will be sent closer to the PDO date, and I will also post it on our website along with recommended readings. I will inform you when I add information to the site.

Required Reading

Next week I will be mailing you two books written by Kashmira Sheth, a Madison author, with whom we will spend an evening with discussing her books. The books are Blue Jasmine (young adult) and Monsoon Afternoon (picture book). The books have arrived late so unfortunately we will not be able to ship them to you before you arrive in Madison. You will recieve them once you arrive.

In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Best wishes,

Rachel Weiss

Dear Fulbrighters,

Please visit our PDO website. We have posted information that will be useful to you as you prepare for your trip, including:

What to take (and not to take) to India
Health and Medical Issues
Cultural Aspects of Cleanliness
Social and Personal Issues in Inida
Recommended Books and Films
Practical Advice from 2009 Fulbrighters

Soon I will post information about your arrival to the PDO venue – The Madison Concourse Hotel – and also the rooming list for your shared accommodations.

You will also find some recommended readings to prepare for your orientation sessions, nothing is mandatory, but if you have the time any reading you do do will aid in your understanding of the complexities that make up India!

As you prepare to pack, get inoculated, etc., questions will arise. You will be receiving an email from Mike Kruse in our office who is setting up a blog for us to communicate with each other. Any questions you have, you can imagine another person is having, so feel free to put it out there in the blog. If you have anything personal or that you don’t want public, you can always email or call me.

I will be sending you a few books by a Madison-author, Kashmira Sheth, that we would like you to read, and a book on Gandhi by Demi. Please email me, verifying that the address on your Fulbright application is the address to which I should mail these books. Kashmira will join us at the PDO so if you want her to autograph your books, bring them with you (we will ship the books back to your home/work address after the PDO so you don’t have to cart them to India).

There was a recommendation from last year’s group that we include a session during the PDO on blogging and uploading pictures/files. If you would value a session on using technology, please reply so that I can work on making time for such a session in the orientation.

Lastly, I want to remind you that your program fee of $450 is due by June 7th. You can send a check payable to Center for South Asia to my attention (full address below), or call me (608) 262-9224 to pay by credit card (Just FYI May 21 campus is on furlough, and May 31st closed for Memorial day).

My best, Rachel. p.s. if you have any food allergies, please notify me soon so that I can insure that we have your needs met at the PDO
